The Catholic University of Portugal is the country’s leading supplier of research and education/training in Food Science, Engineering and Technology. It is involved in many teaching programs that include Packaging topics in the syllabus, at undergraduate, master, and Ph.D. levels, both at the national and European levels. The Packaging Laboratory of UCP is the National Reference laboratory for Portugal since 2004.

Involved persons
Fatima Poças
Researcher and lecturer at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. She teaches packaging materials and systems for the last 30 years and integrates the Research Centre CBQF since 2009. Main research interests are: modelling of migration and permeability processes; shelf-life prediction of packaged food; migration and safety of food contact materials including recycled material; exposure assessment to packaging migrants; development of active packaging and bio-based materials. She coordinates the CINATE (Centre for Food Quality and Safety) since 2013 and the National Reference Laboratory for food contact materials since 2004. She represents Portugal at European Network of Food Contact Materials Laboratories and has served as expert in several working groups of European Food Safety Authority. In the Fitness 2.0 project she coordinates the WP2 Development of certification instruments to monitor learners’ progress.

Maria do Ceu Selbourne
Supervisor and scientific manager of packaging laboratory of CINATE (Centre for Food Quality and Safety) since 1998 at Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Expertise in chemical hazards from packaging systems, safety evaluation of food contact materials and the applicable legislation. Also interested in physical and mechanical testing of packages and packaging materials for quality control and evaluation of their performance. In the Fitness 2.0 project she participates in WP1 developing teaching material and in WP2 developing assessment tools.
